In these troubled times, it feels awkward to celebrate Independence Day this year. As a tiny act of patriotic resistance, I'm opening a wine from Europe.
We came to Canada to escape the heat and…other things. So, I had a Niagara Pinot Noir and thought it very good. The Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) has removed all US beer, wine, and spirits from its shelves. Ontario Province has also mandated no sales of US alcohol products in bars or restaurants. Consequences.
Jay, I had read about LCBO taking that action. I think it hit Kentucky particularly hard because of bourbon! Enjoy your travels in the not-so-frozen North!
It may surprise you, but some of your readers are very pleased with the recent developments in our great country. I am proudly flying my flag upright today, as I do most days. I don't fly it upside down when I oppose the party in power, for fear that it would be interpreted, understandably, as anti-American, as I am anything but. I will defend your right to disagree with your government, but I don't care to listen to it. I don't want to read partisan political commentary in a communication devoted to wine. I have unsubscribed from future emails. I'll definitely be drinking American wine today!
I'm reading this post a little late, but we drank an Alsace Wine - Koenig Gewürztraminer 2020. Without even meaning to "protest," but I like the idea!
Also, thanks for the link for wine searcher. I keep reading about wines here on Substack that sound so good, but have no idea where to begin to find them!

Kent, I appreciate your comment and hear it respectfully. Sorry you feel that you must leave. Peace on your journey.

What a great idea, I just found a nice Bordeaux that I think we will open tomorrow for those that eat meat. Galician Albariño for the grilled fish.
Enjoy your feast, Miguel, and the wines you serve with it.
Enjoy your day too … salud!
¡Y a tú tambien!
I love blaufrankisch, straight up, and Burgenland makes some superb ones. I appreciate your resistance comments! Bravo.
Thanks, Duncan! I love Blaufrankisch also, and Zweigelt too. Mixing characteristics is the weakest point of blends. I thought this one worked, though!
never heard of that Burgenland red looks up my alley
Yep, me either! I grabbed it off the shelf for that same reason and was really glad I did!
After All of these years, I think this is your best article yet!
Alvin, I'm not sure I would go that far, but thanks! :)
IrRESISTable!
Thanks for the kind note, Catania. I’m glad you enjoyed the column, the Wine-Searcher link, and uour delicious Alsace wine! 😄
